Many physicians feel that storage of grafts in a cooler environment improves hair survival. Cooler temperatures are generally obtained by placing a Petri dish containing a specific storage medium on ice. This will effectively drop the temperature of the storage medium to 7 to 10 degrees Celsius. It will not, however, keep the temperature at this level for a prolonged period of time. This is due to the laws of thermodynamics. Heat is transferred to the Petri dish by the warm scalp tissue that eventually elevates the temperature of the storage medium. It has been shown that cellular activity ceases at 4 C or lower. Cellular activity decreases 50% for every 10°C degrees reduction in temperature. Since it is difficult to maintain storage temperatures of 4° C or less, a new method for storing follicles at a constant lower temperature called the HypothermoproÔ allows you to reach a temperature between 0°C and 4°C and maintain this temperature until grafts are re-implanted. In addition, cells may not tolerate multiple changes in temperature from high temperature to low temperature repetitively as temperature rises and drops periodically as ice melts and is replenished by the addition of fresh ice. It stands to reason that cells will much better tolerate a constant lower temperature. Many physicians store their tissue in the refrigerator while they await graft preparation and then return the tissue to room temperature for graft preparation and storage prior to implantation. This may be harmful to cells, as well. Constant low temperatures may provide a potentially healthier environment for cells.
Maintaining low temperatures in the proper storage medium with free radical scavengers may reduce the harmful affects of anaerobic metabolism, ischemia reperfusion, and apoptotic inhibitors. It is important to select storage solutions that are best suited for lower temperature environments for such systems. These include Hypothermosol FRS. Storing grafts in improper storage mediums can result in cellular lysis through the osmotic gradients resulting from reduced cell membrane sodium pump function at lower temperatures. Therefore, it is important to store grafts in specific low temperature mediums with a higher osmolarity and a chemical composition that better resembles that of the intra-cellular space. Hypothermopro with the proper storage medium may provide a more stable environment for the storage of grafts and the dissection of grafts prior to re-implantation. The system also has fiberoptic back lighting for improved visualization during graft production through a patented grafted cutting surface including wells for the storage of grafts and slivers. There is also a silicone pad that allows the physician to stabilize the tissue during the production of silvers. Â Â |
